1944年，他在奥托·普莱明格导演的
《罗兰秘记》中恰到好处的饰演了一个不可靠的、陷入情网的私人侦探。此后一直是一些影片的主要演员，并获得一定的成功。在多数影片中，达纳塑造了一个完全美国型的文质彬彬的形象，但是导演普莱明格善于发掘他灵活多变的气质，让他在《堕落天使》(1945)中饰演犹疑的两面派人物，在《黛茜·凯尼昂》(1947)中饰演风流男子，在《人行道尽处》(1950)中饰演狡诈的侦探，均比较成功。五十年代中期，他的电影生涯走了下坡路，不得不去找寻可以担任主角的小规模制片厂拍片，随着年华老去和酗酒，他渐渐沦为配角。
